RARARRARARARRROARRRR music

Grindcore?

Well, to be honest, I don't like most of the bands in which I can't hear the lyrics either, such as Cannibal Corpse and most of Nile's stuff. But I can actually hear the lyrics in most of the stuff I posted, which IS an important aspect for me. This is one of the reasons I do not like Behemoth; can't make out a single word, even with the lyrics in front of me. So unless it's really THAT musically brilliant, no go.

Another, slightly less important requirement for me is that the music is melodic. I like non-melodic metal as well, but I find it inferior (of course; has to be memorable, no?). This is the reason why I don't listen to that much thrash metal. I find that most of it lacks melody, apart from a solo here and there in an attempt to make up for it.

Those you mention all kick ass, btw.

Anything Goes / The heavy metal topic!
« on: November 25, 2010, 12:34:06 PM »
Made mainly so me and my "green metal bro" Snake33AU won't have to continue our metal discussion in a topic completely unrelated to the genre(s) of music (that "Forum Achievement" topic). Anyone may discuss, recommend, and share anything-metal, naturally! So if you have a love for this fine type of music, tell us about it.

Hey Vyreman, I really liked that second King Diamond song! The double bass pedals and everything, it was nicely done! Ha ha, I know what you mean about the stereotypes of metal. Some people hate labeling metal and simply say "it's all metal! Who cares?" but yeah, I understand the distinct genres out there.

Ha ha, it is funny that the "normal" heavy metal vocals in this case are higher than the power metal ones. It is normally though that power metal have those high vocals. I reckon sometimes certain bands sound a bit cheesy doing it, but most of the time it works, and I much prefer the high vocals and high power chords than those really low and dark ones from death metal. Don't get me wrong though, coz I dun know many death metal bands so i can overly criticize.

Glad you liked Helloween. I only got into them recently, and I thought I had to because they were one of the fathers of power metal. Having said that though, the song that got me into them was more "commercial" and less power metal.
(click to show/hide)

The rhythm guitar plays my three favourite power chords.   lol.
They're so catchy though, and yeah, metal is metal! m/

As for Priest, I agree on Halford's vocal range. You get his "normal" range in songs like Breaking the Law, Hell Bent for Leather, Before the Dawn, You've got another thing coming etc. and then you get higher ranges like in Free Wheel Burning and Screaming for Vengeance (the latter two have guitar solos which I think inspired video game music, like Mega Man X).

I'll be seeing Iron Maiden next year, so I'm looking forward to that.
And Vyreman: rock on my green metal bro!

That Helloween song is also nice! :D I really need to start listening to them. Thanks. And wow, you're seeing Iron Maiden? That makes me really jealous! One of few bands I feel I truly NEED to have seen live at least once in my life.

But anyway, it seems like it's high time for me to make an effort to get you into the heavier forms of metal as well! There's so much greatness I don't want you to miss out on. And you can mention a few traditional metal bands to me if you want to. Not as a way of "paying back" (because who says I'm doing you any sort of favor? lol), but just because I want moar moar moar of it. :P

I will spare you technical/brutal death metal, though. I like that myself, but I know one who isn't even into death metal won't. XD

Ah, death metal and it's subgenres... I've gotten past a point where I have a problem with it (and growling, which I now love as long as you can hear the words), and now I mostly dwell on "the other side"; that is, I listen mainly to various "extreme" metal bands. I mean, sure, I liked Cradle of Filth back then (blech!), at least two of their songs, and I liked Children of Bodom's Downfall, but my first and foremost loves in metal were probably Metallica, Nightwish, Iron Maiden and Iced Earth. And then with the internet, I started getting into the heavier forms. In Flames was one of the first melodic death metal bands I heard, and I do believe they changed a lot. I also really enjoyed Slipknot (double blech!) back then, also contributing to the development of my love for the heavier forms of heavy metal. I still like them for that fact, even if I don't enjoy their mu(sic) (cheesy reference out of gratitude) today. Except Vermillion. That song is still excellent.

There are many bands of the death metal kind (or rather, all the various subgenres) that are VERY melodic, and many of them scrap the low growls for raspy screams instead. But of course, those, too, are an acquired taste. I personally had an easier time listening to such bands in the beginning, though. In Flames and the like appealed to me very much, while I couldn't stand listening to one of my current favorites, Scar Symmetry, because of the low growls. Before I get off the subject of Scar Symmetry, though, take a listen to this song by them (one of their calmer ones):

(click to show/hide)

Before the growling kicks in, the song is actually reminiscent of '80s metal ballads, IMO. It's a modern song to be certain, but it has a bit of an old-school feel to it, and I can't help but love the hell out of it. But then again, I love almost all Scar Symmetry songs, even the ones that sound NOTHING like traditional metal. They mix über heaviness with catchiness. I'm still impressed by the fact that the guy growling is the same guy who's singing. Very talented dude. It's not that rare that growlers/screamers can also sing, though, which so nicely proves those who think they scream because they can't sing wrong.

Here's a more traditional death metal song that still manages to be pretty catchy:

Meh. This post is already far too long, and I really think I should just have thrown all bands of the same genre into one spoiler tag, but whatever. I'll stop myself here. Putting a huge load on you. @_@

But yeah, rock on as well, my green metal bro. ;) Hopefully I've opened you up to at least ONE other genre. lol

I listen almost exclusively to variants of metal, so much more can be found at my Last.FM profile: http://www.last.fm/user/Metality

Okay, here are all the bands that I know I like.
WHICH ONES DO YOU RECOGNIZE?!

Queen
The Black Mages
The Megas
Daft Punk

WOW THAT WAS SHORT.
I recognize all except The Megas, and I'm sure EVERYONE recognizes Queen and Daft Punk. Both popular as all hell.

Anyway, as making LISTS seem to be very popular, I'm gonna do the same. Only that will do justice to the music I like. So... Not in any particular order:

(click to show/hide)

Some I listen to all the time, others from time to time. Some are recent favorites, some are long-term ones.

I'm sure only a fellow metalhead will realize the diversity of this list.

If anyone have more traditional metal, NWOBHM, power metal, or speed metal to recommend me, go right ahead! I love these genres but I just don't know many bands within them (strangely).

Sorry for taking such long time to reply to you, Snake. It's just that your comment was so long (which is a positive thing, mind you) and there was much to address, which I was too lazy to do at the time.

Ahh Vyreman, i haven't sat to consider how short life is yet (might be coz I'm only 24) oh wow, I nearly put my age as 23, lol, but yeah, I do realise time flies above our heads much faster than I'd want.

And I'm only 18, old man (just kidding). :P

We're all individuals, I guess! But it sure does fly by way too fast.

Quote from: "Snake33AU"
How long since you spoke to him last? And yeah, nostalgia can get the better of people sometimes, so I hope it works. Even if he's sorta moved on, he cannot simply forget the good times (i know i get that way with some people I haven't seen in ages, and those who I don't have this major urge to immediately contact either). Ha ha man, nothing gay with having a friend really close like that. Almost family? And I agree, sometimes with my best friend(s) I don't mind even hanging out together and doing nothing, so long we're together. It's a deep feeling, a genuine one really.

Face-to-face, I last spoke to him whenever it was we hung out for the last time. Haven't ran into him anywhere. Online, I've only said a thing or two, and I think the last time I did so was... I have no idea. A few months ago.

"Almost family" is spot-on, good sir. Most certainly!

Quote from: "Snake33AU"
I do hope you do get to contact him again, coz losing a great friend like that must be pretty hard. Sometimes we move on but sometimes it's a lot harder. Strange though (and I will wrap this up) that this group of friends I had I was really really close to, used to hang out every weekend, thought this wouldn't change, but eventually we stopped seeing each other for months on end. I guess it's different with individuals. These two major friends I hang out with (one guy from highschool and one girl who I met from another friend) I cannot bare to imagine my life without them.  :? It would be like taking a piece of me away.

It's too bad that you've stopped seeing them (at least frequently), but at least you have two other close friends. I really hope you'll never be detached from them. If you feel like you're slipping away, try your best to change that while it's in reach. I know you don't want to experience those times again. Be sure to learn from your mistakes -- I'll try to do the same on any future occasions. The second worst thing about slipping away from someone is the regrets that follow. Not having them around anymore is bad, but wishing it was otherwise, and then realizing it's your own fault and that you had the power to keep things intact but didn't... Yeah. It feels foolish. Very much so.

Quote from: "Snake33AU"
Anyways, sorry for the essay, lol, but I thought your story struck me very deep. My best wishes for you and your friend, and that the future be kind to you my friend.  :)

Haha, no worries at all! It was a good read, albeit a bit sad. But best wishes to you as well, mate. Hope the future treats you just as kindly!

Yeah, musically King Diamond are freakin' marvelous, this song being my favorite (as I mentioned):

(click to show/hide)

Can't stop listening to that song.

It's funny, though. I always thought Rob Halford's high vocals were REALLY high, at times a bit unbearable to me; this guy beats him by miles. It doesn't get much brighter than this. Only song I can recall (of those I've heard) in which Rob Halford comes close would be Metal Meltdown. I think I've become a lot more tolerant because of King Diamond -- most of the high vocals in Judas Priest feel pretty tame to me now, which actually makes me enjoy it (and them) more. I just see it as "fucking metal! m/" now, you know? :P So thank you, King Diamond, for providing me with more enjoyment outside of your area!

Haven't heard that Helloween song before, by the way. That kicks ass! The vocals are good too. But it's kind of funny how King Diamond has higher vocals than that, as King Diamond are regular Heavy Metal (or some Danish NWOBHM-like thing?) while Helloween are of the high-vocal genre itself, power metal. Although I guess that's a bit of a generalization....power metal doesn't NEED those high vocals to be power metal.

Meh, all this heavy metal talk. I can't help myself... *runs off and listens to Priest's Painkiller*

That guy is fucking nuts. Had to get used to the vocals to even like the band (Mercyful Fate too). But they are fucking awesome, especially A Mansion In The Darkness. I always liked King Diamond's non-high vocals, though. I really wish they'd focuse on that, with the super-high ones only appearing on a few places (like in Judas Priest).

Metal Storm... is that the one for NES where you can flip gravity at will?  I've barely played it, but it seems pretty sweet.  Like, a game I'd have been obsessed with if I'd had it as a kid.

That's the one.

Kickass game.

Oh, the songs I'd be able to make if I could actually write down ANYTHING that pops into my mind... I've tried using trackers on and off for a year or so, but I cannot create anything half-decent at this point. I guess more practice is needed. Feels a bit pointless, though.

Do you have any other songs you could share?

EDIT: Searched my way to your music on 8bc. Never you mind.

Anything Goes / Re: Where did you get your name?
« on: November 21, 2010, 03:08:33 PM »
I was making a new character in Runes of Magic. An Elf kind. So what I wanted was a name that sounded like an Elf, but was still somewhat original. The result was Vyreon (forget the fact that there is a one-man progressive metal band called Ayreon -- I do not listen to his music and I swear I did not have him in mind), which I also used later on League of Legends (LoL). When first playing MM8BDM, I did not know what name to use, but Vyreon came to mind. I megamanized it and stuck with it, later that day registering at the forum as, yeah, Vyreman.

Yep, the nickname is very recent, and is subject to change. I doubt it will be my permanent nick, like many of yours. I wish I was in your shoes...it's so cool. You also get to be nostalgic when "looking back" at the origin of your name; I've had no such experience, because I switch nick like every second month. Except Simoneer -- that's something I use on a lot of sites, and have done the past 2 years, but never as something serious, and USUALLY as just a username rather than nickname (like login names for MMORPGs and such). Now you know my real name, though. Simon.

I like that name because of The Saint and Castlevania. :p
