Cutstuff Discussion and Feedback / Re: Cutstuff Minecraft Server! 1.3.1!
« on: October 26, 2012, 10:28:32 PM »
I dont normally doublepost, but... There's finnally a update! Perhaps this might make the server a bit active again? There isnt a great amount of new content, but there's one new boss monster and two normal ones, a overworld and a nether one.

One of the features that is pretty neat for decoration is the Item Frames, which can even display full maps, and maps can be intentionally duplicated now, which will come in very handy...
I'm sure the new boss and the costs of a beacon and such will keep people busy if this gets updated/hosted (havent checked in ages :P).

All the changes should be listed here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Version_history#1.4.2
Hm, if this gets updated/hosted i really hope the map will be something usefull and easy to build in, but not too open and boring either, ah that snowy mountain map with the ice road village worked out really well... Good times...

Quite interesting, you mean it can directly interact with the build engine .map files or simply read them when they happen to be in a zip like it does with regular Doom maps?

As for the main post, i dont know of any tutorial to use Slumped or Slade, but they're really easy to get the hang of anyway, detailed tutorials about DECORATE, for example, might instruct you to make a file with your editor called simply decorate, though extensions like .txt or .wav/.ogg and whatnot are still possible but not needed most of the time, i think.
There's a fair share of tutorials on http://zdoom.org/wiki/ for doom editing. Great place to learn DECORATE and ACS, and various other filetypes.

Otherwise, one of the best ways to learn aside from a tutorial is to look at and learn how someone else made theirs. Oh, and this topic is probaly in the wrong forum, there's a Help & Editing forum for topics like these that are for general help and doom/mm8bdm editing help.

Cutstuff Discussion and Feedback / Re: [Site Suggestion] Download Button
« on: October 22, 2012, 10:17:31 PM »
Cant really speak here for what Cutman wants, but you will probaly want to cut those black outer edges with some image editor, though im no expert on what might do the job for that.
The 'download' text is blinking a bit much and gets annoying to the eye though, if you ask me, personally it might look better if it doesnt blink at all, or atleast not as rapidly. Or phasing in and out of existence, but i'm not sure if thats very 8-bit anymore.

Aside from that its a pretty good effort, and well-sized too, if you ask me.

Hm, havent checked myself. Got way too hooked up in some of the new games i got recently, before that Minecraft was a way to kill time without needing a new game. Having a large GTA2 project and attempting to revive GVH right now isnt going to improve chances either. Just cant sqeeze in the time or interest, unless the update has some REALLY interesting stuff.

Guess waiting for the update kind of killed it this time...

The Ghoul's Forest / Re: Trying to update. Need your input!

Well good to see there's still some interest in an update. Quite at a loss though on what else to add, any small idea you'd think is worth adding is probaly worth looking at. Even the smallest improvement to classes might help.

After some heavy class analysing i guess i'll focus on the global systems(ACS/DECORATE) instead and see if those need touching up in any way.

Edit: Trying another suggestion of a friend, if it works out it should make the GB alot more interesting.

Hm, that would probaly be too harmfull, they would be forced to attack within a time limit and the Humans would know this and be even more prepared, or simply run away infinitely so the Creeper just... 'starves' to death due to the time limit. Not to mention the Creeper requires some good tactics to sneak up succesfully on Humans in general as long as they're not camping on anti-Creeper spots.

Creeper's hard enough to play already, so yeah thats a bit much. Cant really do anything about the stallers without harming the Creeper. Though a good ol votekick solves these issues just fine if the server has them.

Feel free to bring up any other issues though, got all the time in the world and not enough changes to start updating. :P

Given the current situation, i'd figure i'd try and update GVH again in hopes it'll become popular again. Only problem is, there's hardly any ideas to warrant an update! No critical bugs as far as im aware to get rid of, and only a handfull of potential changes.

I'll list a few ideas here that are likely making it into the next version, by all means give some input about them if you got any to share. Reasons for these changes are listed as well. Keep an eye out for the list as i'll keep adding things to the list if anything else comes up.

The reasons why:

If you have any suggestions to improve these ideas or ideas of your own, who knows. Know that i cant accept every idea though, it might go against the nature of the game, or simply be to cheap or too much of a nerf, or such things.
Edit: Oh and its probaly not too usefull to ask for major map changes. Anything small or a fix, sure. But i doubt map owners would be pleased about big changes without their permission.

Anything Goes / Re: I need help with M.U.G.E.N.!!!!!

Ah good ol' mugen, i still play it occasionally when bored fighting through the campaign i've set up with various characters with decent/powerfull AI, but nothing too hard on raw damage or impossible AI with (near-)instant low or high attacks or such crap. Often the funny kind of characters like The_None makes, because normal characters are just so... bland.

I think this site is good for finding mugen characters, stages and stuff: http://www.mugen-infantry.net/
Doesnt have everything but its the biggest collection i know of, else try looking for characters by using both the author and character names in Google or something.

Its a shame people hardly try to learn and use 'balanced' and well-made characters though. But each their own tastes...

Edit: Wow, its like every topic i post on just... dies. Just like that. :P

The Ghoul's Forest / Re: What would happen if GvH was commercial?
« on: September 30, 2012, 08:37:54 PM »
It would certainly be interesting, but compared to other multiplayer-only games out there like Team Fortress 2, this is really, really small. And it would get old fast, too. Ah, not to mention the large amounts of legal troubles, considering atleast 3 ghouls are based off of actual (very expensive) helloween masks, and Doomguy, and the hunter being an edit from one of the Hexen/Heretic (forgot which one) main characters. And it takes material from so much other games too. :P

If you ignore the size and replayability issues, the graphics can be worked around and remade if this where to become a actual product, i think. If they're remaking the voices as well that could end up being hilarious, as Cutman produced the Creeper voice without any kind of aid, i heard. God that must have been bad for his throat.

Edit: And yeah, the forum's pretty inactive these days, be carefull about bumping old topics or the mods will come after you. Unless there's a good reason for reviving the old topic, i think.

If you dont mind me changing the course of the topic minorly. While we're at it, anyone have recommendations on where to upload avatars? Preferabaly no or not too annoying registering and if its actually reliable. Not to mention some sites disallow linking to or loading images directly from them.

While im not planning to set anything now its always usefull for later, and maybe for others?

Help & Editing / Re: um i need help with doom builder
« on: September 24, 2012, 05:20:44 PM »
Hm, didnt know par was for that. Also a bit extra information:
Be sure to enter the name of a (sky) tile for sky1, not a filename.

And if you're uncertain what music needs what name, look around in the MM8BDM-v2c.pk3 file or whatever the latest version is.
The path inside the file for musics should be something like: MM8BDM-v2c.pk3/musics, meaning its in musics.wad located inside the pk3 file. Depending on your wad editor you could listen the music from there. You can also look into the wad files named after robot masters and look for the MAPINFO in there to see what it music or such uses.

Hm, funny thing is that technically this isnt related to Doom Builder 2 at all. Its all just external file editing. :P

Help & Editing / Re: um i need help with doom builder

Aw you quite ninja'd me on that. Well i'll make an easy explanation anyway.
If your map file is in its own .wad file you'll need to open it with an editor like Slade or SLumpEd, or a .zip file editor might work too but you'll need to prepare the file in advance and then clog it in i think. If the map is part of various maps the starting folder of the wad/pk3 file will often contain the mapinfo file instead, as is explained further in the link Ivory posted, i think.

What i do on maps is open it up with an editor, make a new file and call it MAPINFO, open it as a text file and add in the following kind of text, explained below:

Code: [Select]
map MAP01 "Map name here" //Change MAP01 to your map's filename if needed.
{
   levelnum = 90 //Dont need to change this.
   next = "MM1CUT" //Can be changed.
   sky1 = "MRXSTARS", 0.1 //F_SKY1 using surfaces will display the tile entered here.
   cluster = 90 //Uh, nothing important i think, leave as is?
   music = "GRAMUS" //Change the music to whatever you like.
   aircontrol = 0.5 //Default for MM8BDM, best not to change it.
   forcenoskystretch //No need to change this.
   par = 5 //Same as above.
   clipmidtextures //Also same as above.
}
Edit: Note that everything after a // is a (harmless) comment and not counted as actual lines of code. Same deal for everything between /* and */, everything before and after that is still counted as code and the compiler or whatever will read and compile those. Good use of these makes navigating and/or understanding script alot easier.

next is used to define what map will load after this map normally finishes. Use map filenames, not names defined in MAPINFO.
sky1 is used to set what sky will display in appropiately made sky areas.
music is used similar to next, but you use a music file's filename instead. Make sure you either add the music file to the wad file or if it comes from another wad, to load it with that wad or it wont play that music.

So yeah, short version, open up the wad file containing your map you're working on, make a new file called MAPINFO, add the above and ajust them as needed, save changes, load up the map and it should work if all goes well.

These days its either Normal or Hard, right now i think its on Normal, but i havent checked in ages, got distracted by other things.

In case you dont know the transition from normal to hard means more damage from monster attacks, Zombies can succesfully break down non-iron doors, especially Creeper explosions become deadly at insane ranges (i hate those godamn things) and starving will actually kill you, instead of having half health(Easy) or half a heart left(Normal).

I personally doubt they'd ban you for getting glitched from all of Skulltag's servers. Seems more likely your internet might have taken a hit there, or something went wrong with your server browser.
Is it displaying in any logs that you've been banned from the master server? If not perhaps try the instructions in this topic.

If neither Ivory's or my solution work, well, i dont know. Might be your internet then, somehow.

Ah, too bad its invitation only. Suppose i might ask Brotoad or Mr X at some point (unless only admins can add more people, hm, no idea). Atleast for now my MvM server worked like a charm, safe for some fps drops when a large wave crashes in during more advanced missions, but i did not hear anyone complaining about the lag with their 60-100-ish ping.

Sure was good ol fun though, always liked good old fashioned co-op, and invasion is pretty great too, and this just combines the two quite very well. Now just to manage to log on some more, as i keep sleeping at the most inconvenient times...

Edit: Seems Mr. X invited me, thanks! Should probaly try organizing some mvm games when back from work.
