Tutorial Collection / Re: [TUTORIAL] Creating new skins for MM8BDM
« on: January 29, 2011, 01:38:41 AM »
Alright, I've practically got most of this down to a science by now, except for one thing.

When I extract all the sprites, I run into a file titled "thumbs.db".  Since I don't have much choice, I extract it with all the sprites, and every time I attempt selecting it to do something with it, SLumpEd "encounters a problem and needs to close."

What is thumbs.db?  Is it supposed to be there?  Did I do something wrong while spriting?  DETAILS, MAN, I NEED DETAILS.

EDIT WITH MORE INFORMATION:  Thumbs.db only appears when I attempt to import the lumps, never anywhere else.  Any attempt of interacting with it after being imported causes SLumpEd to crash.  Moving Thumbs results in two copies of it:  one where you moved it, and the other right back in the folder.  HOW DO I GET RID OF IT?

There was already a Mario made, but that was the third edition of Mario. The new Mario being made was the Mario from the original Super Mario Brothers.

Ah, it feels good to be acknowledged.

ON-TOPIC:

I don't think there's enough blue on the sprite.  On the front view, there's hardly any at all.  Try making his belly blue, because, at Mike said, it's important to have as much of that as you can, because that's how people see your weapon.

Well, I'm aiming to base it on MEGAmorrison's designs of the Robot Masters. I didn't really quite designed all of the Robot Masters, but yeah. And I don't really want to insult him either if I used completely different designs. Surely I wasn't a great mugshot artist, but atleast it was better then these

Yes, surely you're doing a much better job than him, but I'm only critiquing to try and help you improve.  Now you've given me concept art.  Now I can critique more.  Below, sprinkled in with the critique, are links to the references I used.

Dog-Man's dot needs to be larger.  His helmet is too big and his eyes are too small, and they should be slanted, too.

Diamond-Woman's helmet needs to curve downward, not upward.  The gem should be larger, and their eyes should be pointed, like Splash-Woman's.

Apparently, Toilet-Man is as bland as he looks, but his eyes are supposed to be red.

...Actually, Bamboo-Man looks perfect.

The symbol on Cook-Man is triangle-shaped, and his hat still should be poofier.

Chemical-Man's shoulder pads are green.

Angel-Man still needs wings, and--WARNING, OPINION AHEAD--I think he'd look better with a halo.

Static-Man, like I said, needs more face-room, and he's supposed to be purple instead of blue, speaking of using the same designs.

Hmm...

Dog-Man would look better is his ears were droopier.

Diamond-Woman's shading looks awkward, and their palette really ought to match that of, say, Crystal-Man or Jewel-Man.

Toilet-Man looks pretty bland.  But that's about it.

Bamboo-Man would look better if the lines were vertical, maybe a leaf coming off of his head.

Cook-Man's hat should be poofier.  Also, what's with the orange thing in his head?

Chemical-Man also looks boring.  With that design, you should probably have him wear a radiation suit.

Angel-Man needs a halo/wings.  Also, his head looks flat.

Static-Man needs more room for his face, you can practically see it on his face.  His palette is good, though.

With gimp, make sure you don't have a "Background layer". The layer with bold text. So copy your crap to a new layer and delete the background layer. That's the 1st step.

The 2nd step is down to you.

I know you're probably busy with other stuff, but...

The entire reason of me posting is to get a straight answer with this question; fiddling leads to breaking, and I just want to do one thing with this.  Talking in riddles is frustrating...could I please get a straightforward answer?

EDIT:  Sorry for the bluntness.  I decided to actually read through the reskin tutorial topic, and it explained what to do.  You may now lock this, if you have such powers.

I considered having Scarfy change into his monster form while attacking, but giving how often you attack, I thought it'd make him look constantly ugly.

Well, then, I'm kind of stumped about how one would apply attacking, then--and movement, for that matter.  Same story with Burt, although movement is easy for him--flapping his wings.

On a note to the maker, if this is an actual chapter addition, shouldn't we save the Nightmare as being the boss for all of it?

MSPaint is good

If only--I don't believe it's capable of making transparent backgrounds.

Anyway, since this is still my "cry for help" thread, I took a look at both GIMP and Paint.NET...and they're mind-blowingly complicated.  Can someone explain to me how to do the one thing I need to be able to do--make transparent backgrounds--in ANY aforementioned system?

Front/R and Back/R hurt poses only please :>

I thought that was only to conserve room, and you could make as many as needed...

Here's bronto burt and scarfy.

Any suggestions?

For Burt, the back view looks kinda boring.  Nothing much you can do about that, though.  Also, how will you handle palette changes?

For Scarfy, he looks pretty good.  Just a suggestion, here, but I think that if he changed into the other form while attacking, it'd look a whole lot better.

Mega Man Discussion / Re: megaman lulzy moments
« on: January 27, 2011, 01:23:04 AM »
Well, most of my fail moments weren't hilarious enough to remember.  I've dropped about 5 lives down bottomless pits-'n'=such, but there was one notable thing.

It was Cut-Man's stage, Mega Man.  I'm running along, I have nearly full health, no special weapons.  I always defeat Cut-Man first.  I walk down the long-ass boss hallway, without a scratch.  I come to Cut-Man...and he starts cutting me up.  I manage to pin him against a wall, but I keep getting damaged whenever he's attacked.  It's a race, and I don't wanna be first.  I relentlessly mash the Fire button, and finally, with one hit point left, I watch Cut-Man explode, in that colorful explosion of his...

And the Rolling Cutter, currently behind me, comes back around, smacks me in the back, and kills me.  Fun.

I should just negate all of your-all's rants by taking this and making it an actual skin...too bad I have too many things to do as is.

Thanks...if this forum had the Thank mechanic, I'd be using it.

Y'know, it's really frustrating that I have to go through all this trouble just to give my spritesheets a transparent background...but I'm rambling, and there's nothing I can do about it.

So thanks again, yadda yadda.

Get gimp.

No links, no background information, no knowledge of its capabilities...I wouldn't buy it if it was free.

You've probably seen me floating around by now, making some custom sprites.  However, I'm in need of one more thing to begin serious work on them.

I need some form of advanced editing system--preferably Photoshop.  I snooped around myself, but I'd prefer to get it straight from the folks who already have it.  So, if you could send to where you "acquired" it, it would be most appreciated.

Gordo is round! Your side views look like a prism rather than a sphere. Also the front/r and back/r's spikes are kind of rouned.

I actually thought I had done a good job on the diagonals...

But yeah, I really did make him less of a "ball" and more of a "coin."  Y'see why I bother to ask what people think?
Revised version:

Give him sunglasses.

I would...if it would actually add any form of quality to the sprite.

...All right, I successfully finished a spritesheet, and I think it looks pretty good.  However, "where I come from," we always look to improve before the final product.  I'll post the spritesheet I have, and I want you to, obviously, tell me how I can make it better.  And if it looks good, well...say that.

Also, since Gordo always hovers, should I place it a bit higher up when I'm aligning it for programming?

(On an unrelated note, you spelled my name wrong.  "CHAOS" is spelled with an S, not another Z.)
