GIGANTIC OPINION ALERT WRITTEN WAY TOO LATE AT NIGHT
To get a viewpoint of a very average person on this sight, I bring to you this little (but long) perspective.
The average day of Smunch looking at Doomseeker. (Spoilered since this is the ridiculous part of the post, skip if you don't like to read excessively)
All right, let's check out the servers today. Rage Robo is full, but I'm not gonna join even if a spot opens, and duel's got a good chunk of people, but a hefty line and I feel like playing a game with more than 1 opponent. So what are the empty server possibilities today..
All right, seems to be a foreign server or 2, can't join those with my ping. Ah, I really wanna play, so I guess I'll join DM and wait for someone. Ooohh, that empty Screw Scramble is tempting, but I know if I join, it'll max out at about 4 people even if I wait. So I'll sit in DM.
5 minutes later... ooh, someone joined! I guess we can start. Maybe we should mapvote to a smaller map, and lower the fraglimit... or not. (Note: Mess's DM server doesn't allow Fraglimit votes, making small groups of people getting 30 frags a chore, and less fun) Ah, another person, and another! Oh, but that one's just spectating. 3's enough, so that's good!
Aaahh, time ran out, but I made it to 19 frags and won. Wonderful! Oh no, don't leave! Ah, just me, (insert opponent here), and the spectator. 'Nother huge map, but I'll try it.
5 frags in a row, domination, nice! Oh no no no no no, don't leave! Just me and the spectator. Guess I'll sit and wait for some other people. But eehhh, I'm sick of this, its almost like duel with gigantic fraglimits. I'll just go play some classic megaman to fill the void.
The problems, according to Smunch: (Note: Rage Roboenza is popular. It'll be there. Always. For a while, at least. Don't like it? Deal with it. There are LOTS of other players than the 18ish that fill up said server at a time.)
Problem #1: A nearly empty DM (and many other types of) server(s) feels like a long, long, tedious duel. Those within it get sick of it early, and leave quickly.
Solution: Whenever you see a 2-person DM server, don't dismiss it as a dead server. Think of it as a
budding server. And hopefully join, of course! (Note: Classes DM has many overpowered classes, and useless classes. LMS/TLMS is where it allows variety and truly shines.)
Problem #2: Fraglimit (and subsequently Timelimit/Map) votes help keep Matches at tolerable playing lengths, but they aren't allowed in the biggest 24/7 DM server.
Solution: Someone convince Mess to allow them, and allow them yourselves potential server hosts. And players, DON'T make stupid votes! That's why the votes are disallowed.
Problem #3: Server modes. Most servers host either DM, or a custom-expansion game.
Solution: Hosts, follow Ice-Ix's words: Team games! TDM, TLMS, CTF. And players, JUMP at the chance to play these games. Even stuff like LMS
(personal favorite) and Possession where you're on your own are rare enough, play 'em up!
Problem #4: Short attention spans. If a game is fairly empty, like CTF with about 4 people, soon enough people will get frustrated with how little people there are/the difficulty of facing the opposing team that outclasses them easily, and somebody leaves, leading to a chain of leaving.
Solution: In an empty server, try talking with whomever is playing with you. If you're not having to much fun playing with 1 or 2 people, get to know them! Its a community, we know a lot of people's names, but we don't know what they're like. If you relax and enjoy the company of the person, sooner or later there's bound to be more people that start to join the server. You don't even have to play until people start to come in, as long as you enjoy yourselves.
Alternatively... If you aren't the socialite, find something to do in another window, or IRL while waiting. And at least respond if someone tries to converse with you, common courtesy. Be nice-ish.
Problem #5: Arguing and ranting on the forums rather than playing the game.
Solution: Rather than talk about the game, play it! Trust me, its a LOT funner. You can post here and play, but remember what most of this forum is about: MM8BDM!
Poor GvsH even though I don't play itGeneral Tips that you should already know:1. Don't abuse the use of complaining.
2. Use hatred in the SMALLEST amount possible. Keep it to yourself. Be nice about presenting your view.
I tried to, did I succeed?3. Try to be sane.
4. Be friendly to everyone, like them or not. Make friends, make acquaintances.
5. Be modest if you are good. Never snobby. Don't brag to people that you aren't close to. Even then, keep it minimal.
6. Play often.
7. Have fun while playing. If you aren't, YOU'RE PLAYING THIS GAME WRONG. This is the one thing in this post that is fact, not opinion.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'll sleep off the craziness that allowed me to post this nonsense. Take it as garbage or gold, its an opinion.. apparently in some kind of essay format.
tl;dr? Get off the forums and play the game. And have fun doing it.
