Been playing some Doom64 (through the use of the Doom 64 EX total conversion).
I already prefer it to Doom II. Now THIS is a sequel.
Doom II was basically an expansion pack. Same graphics, one new weapon, two new monsters, one new boss. The game is alright, but I prefer the first game.
Doom64, however, has a new art style, and feels different enough from Doom I to be its own thing but is still faithful enough to be a true sequel.
Two new monsters?
Chaingunner, Hell Knight, Revenant, Mancubus, Arachnotron, Pain Elemental, Arch-Vile. Technically the SS Nazi and Commander Keen too and then the final boss.
Doom 2 introduced a grand total of 10 new monsters to Doom. Most of them also feature attack patterns that are more than hit scan, melee or projectile that flies straight. While I prefer Doom 1 levels, I do enjoy the monster variety Doom 2 introduced.
Doom 2 also featured a whole load of new textures, it wasn't just Doom 1's textures reused.
Doom 64 on the other hand actually did only introduce two new monsters. The Nightmare Imp and the Mother Demon and the rest were taken from Doom 1 and 2. I like all these games, but your reasons for calling Doom 2 nothing more than an expansion pack is very weak. Ultimate Doom EP4 was an expansion pack, Doom 2 was its own game.
