The above screen capture proves it's not an issue with the engine version.
Do you have any other addon folders such as announcers or bots? Make sure neither of those contain anything abnormal.

I use Doomseeker to join directly to a server.
I don't have skins either.

Hmm...
Try joining a server with just MM8BDM-v4c.pk3
Best Ever "vanilla" 8BDM servers usually run that alongside the new text colors file. Regardless of the presence of newtextcolors1_220.pk3 you should be able to join if all your wads are kosher.

That would leave megagame.wad and any other folders that are automatically loaded when the game launches, such as announcers.
Go into your 8BDM main folder and delete your megagame.wad, replacing it with
this one
and try again.
If that doesn't work, make sure there isn't a folder called "announcer" in your 8BDM folder.
If neither of those work I'll see if there's anything else that could cause this issue.
It's a protected lump error but all the wads listed for pwads are fine, meaning the issue must be assets that weren't loaded as pwads. That leaves megagame.wad, anything in the skins folder, and anything in the announcer folder...
idunno...I appreciate your patience with this issue and I'm sorry I'm being so slow with it.
