Computer freezes after Cutstuff logo
« on: March 31, 2016, 06:48:36 PM »
The title basically says it, as soon as I turn on the game and the Cutstuff logo appears, my computer suddenly freezes and I can't do ANYTHING, literally ANYTHING unless I turn off my PC and turn it on again, which is sad cuz' honestly I really wanted to play this.

So i'm just asking this here in the off-chance that it IS a problem with the game, I remember seeing a thread about a guy with a similar problem but that was in v3 so I thought it wouldn't affect me, and even when trying what I think was his solution (i'm not sure if I understood it correctly) it still freezes my PC.

I'd appreciate some help if I can get some.

The issue may have something to do with your renderer.
A user posted this on what appears to be a similar problem a couple years ago, maybe it'll help you.

Below is a list of console commands, separated by line. Copy and paste the first line into the Extra Command Line Parameters box in the launcher and start the game. If it still crashes, clear the Extra Command Line Parameters and try the next line:

+Vid_Renderer 0 +fullscreen 0
+Vid_Renderer 0 +fullscreen 1
+Vid_Renderer 1 +fullscreen 0
+Vid_Renderer 1 +fullscreen 1
+Vid_Renderer 1 +fullscreen 0 +GL_Vid_Compatibility 1
+Vid_Renderer 1 +fullscreen 1 +GL_Vid_Compatibility 1

Let me know if that helps.

When I copy paste them it makes me have to select a file, do I just select the MM8BDM pk3 file or something else? I really want to be sure as to not screw up anything.

Don't press the add file button, just paste, for example +Vid_Renderer 0 +fullscreen 0 into the white space there.
Then launch the game.

This will be quite annoying as everytime one doesn't work (the first one didn't work, that's the only one i've tried so far since studies and stuff) my computer freezes and I have to turn it off and wait for it to turn on then find this post again and test the next one out but I think I can do it, anything for this game.

Also, now that i'm saying this, if one does work, will I have to input it everytime I want to play the game?

No, once these settings are applied, you should only have to do it once.

As a slight remedy, try hitting ctrl-alt-delete instead of forcing your computer to shut down. If you're using Windows 7, it should being up a screen and force focus off of Zandronum/MM8BDM.

I don't think you specified which operating system you used, but I can only assume it's some form of Windows given you're using the main launcher.

Yes, it's Windows 7, i'll try that next time though I swear I already tried it once and it didn't work, thanks for the answer! Right after this post i'm going to start trying the rest of the lines, i'm sorry if it seems like my posts are not very helpful but i'm honestly trying to get as many questions and info out before I start trying them because, y'know, the whole computer freeze thing.

Okay I've tried all of them except 2 (which are "vid render 1 full screen 1" and "vid render gl compatibility fullscreen 1" but I have to ask: Are these just the "fullscreen 0" versions but with fullscreen? because "vid render 0 fullscreen 1" was the same as using "vidrender 0 full screen 0" to me.

Also, so far none of them have worked, the closest I have to progress is "vid render 1 fullscreen 0", y'see, usually the cutstuff logo appears surrounded by weird static, but when I tried "vid render 1 fullscreen 0", it still froze but there was no static.

When you type +fullscreen 0 in the white box, is the game still in fullscreen?

In this setup, 0 turns off fullscreen, and 1 turns it on.

Well, I worded that wrong: I meant that it's in the same as in it gives the same results: the one that has fullscreen 0 has no fullscreen while the one that has a 1 does, I meant that they were the same in terms of result (I think they even had a similar pattern of static if that makes sense).

I was asking if the fullscreen 1s were the same as the 0s but in fullscreen because if they are, then that technically means I've already tried every line with no changes whatsoever.

Fullscreen being off is generally more stable and is much easier to quit from.
Your computer still freeze with vid_renderer 0 and fullscreen 0?
Like... the whole computer freezes, not just the program?

That's kinda weird if that's the case.
All you're doing is running it and letting it show the intro screens, right?

Yeah, I mean, I had like one page open the first time but I didn't think it would cause the PC to freeze again

If it's this weird of a problem then maybe it's just my computer not being able to handle the game? I mean it wasn't that GB-Heavy but it's a possibility.

Alright, I want you to try something completely different.

Go to the "connect" tab in the launcher.
In the IP address box, set 73.218.217.178:10666 as the value.

In the extra command line parameters, set +vid_renderer 0 +fullscreen 0, then hit connect.

Tell me what that does.

If all goes well, you should connect to Deathwind's Vanilla Server.

Okay dude I just tried it! It worked, man! Thanks a lot, but um....does this mean I won't be able to play singleplayer?

EDIT: OKAY OKAY OKAY, I just discovered something: it's not the Cutstuff logo itself, it's just singleplayer stuff in general! I did what you told me to and the map runned smooth and it looked great and it controlled fine but THE MOMENT I accessed single player through the menu, the computer froze on me, so it's something to do with singleplayer....Well, at least I can play multiplayer? Though I'm not very good at shooters in mutliplayer which is why I wanted to try singleplayer to train  :?

EDIT 2: Okay, scratch that: I pressed space to join the game and my computer froze on me again, dang, right when I thought I had discovered the source of the problem....Honestly, all this seems to point to the one cause I feared: My computer can't handle the game  :(
