I've downloaded the file and extracted the contents.
But when I try to run MM8BDM.exe, all I get is a black screen from which I need to kill via Task Manager.
Any suggestions?

Are you connected to the internet on the machine you're using? If not, try waiting a few minutes. If you are, I'm not sure what to tell ya. You could get Doom Seeker and run it from there, but the only way to start singleplayer would be to join a server and then go to the main menu (hit escape).
