I also don't have a problem with Call of Duty.  My roommate played it religiously last year and it was pretty fun to watch.  I started a profile and nearly completed the campaign.  Very fun.  However, I have a problem with people who believe a generic FPS set in drab environments (other than Black Ops, thank God for the jungle) is the single greatest game ever.  At least Halo has some fun weapons that mix it up (Gravity Hammer, anyone?).

Okay, yeah, I wasn't telling all of truth earlier.
What Mr. X said is essentially what I think, and thought.

You know what grinds my gears people saying that call of duty is the best fps game of all time. Hmm last time I check Doom and wolfenstien Defined what is FPS so yea for all you ppl out there know your history of gaming

Tell me what grinds your gears

You grind my gears, like so freakin' bad it hurts. Your logic is flawed on so many levels. And you're on a high horse for some reason.

So basically, something new cannot be the best simply because... (AMIGAWSH) it was not the first? Dude, seriously? Are you confusing words here? Best does not equal "original". Originality, while a good thing, doesn't mean it's necessarily even good. Besides that, there is such a thing as improvement. If you polish the original concept for 20 years, of course you will come out with something better, unless nostalgia punches you in the face. I seriously cannot fathom the stupidity of discounting anything new simply because it's not old.

And then you proceed to say "know your history of gaming", just like you cannot possibly know about old games because you enjoy new. You're blinded by your own ego and nostalgia. Grow up.

But anyway, let's get a scenario up in this bitch, shall we? Are you stupid if you say Mega Man 10 is the best one simply because it's not the first Mega Man? How does that work? And does the one calling Mega Man 10 the best "know nothing about the history of Mega Man", simply because he prefers the game that came later? Treat each game as seperate entities. Originality has nothing to do with quality. A rather sucky game can be original, and a superb game can be unoriginal.

I guess you would also say someone who thinks a movie from the '90s is the best are nubcakes who know nothing about movies. I mean, last time you checked, some stuff from the early 1900s defined movies. Clearly, the first movie ever made is the best -- these idiots don't know anything. Because older is better. Quality has nothing to do with anything.

Besides... Wolfenstein 3D? Seriously? It may have been one of the very first, but it's seriously not very good at all if you ask me, let alone is it anywhere near the best. It's as simple as it gets. Too simple. Very bland. Not only are you dead-wrong, but I would say you have poor taste if you consider that to be one of the best games, sir. Most influential, suuure. But that's all it is.

Agree with the above post.  Doom and Wolf3D may have been innovators but they certainly aren't the best.

CoDMW2 isn't the best either.  Not by a long shot, but at least its better than Doom and Wolf 3D.

I can't stand Wolf3D. It's so...boring. You run about a maze looking for keys, beating up the same enemies again, and again. Everything looks the same, the guns are virtually just faster versions of the last. Boring Boring Boring. Sure it was an innovator, but that doesn't change the fact I rather watch paint dry then play Wolf3D. Doom exceeded it in every last category.
Wolfenstein laid down the foundations, Doom built on that.

However, I would strongly disagree that CoDMW2 is better than Doom. Anyone who disagrees has to take a look at the fact, Doom's still living to this day. The community has not died, and it's still actively modded for. Like the very mod that 99% of you are here to play.

Doom's gameplay has never been replicated by modern games. You aren't a spartan with recharging shields, or magic powers. You're fast. That's what makes the Doom Marine powerful. The fact you can dodge and weave between enemy bullets alone is something you don't see in Modern FPS games, outside of "bullet times".

Doom is still one of the top fps games ever crafted. There is a reason why the community still lives on. And there is a reason why most modern fps games these days bore me to death.

If anyone is interested, http://vectorpoem.com/news/?p=74
This should be very informative to why Doom is still alive today.

doom is fun, but the community is moreso thriving because the engine is so easy to build on, rather than the original game itself. all the mods generally improve on the original, or turn it into a new game entirely

i doubt the fanbase would be as huge as it is now without that modding aspect.

doom of course is a great game, but in it's original form it's pretty dated, and although i can clearly understand why many people would prefer it to newer fps games like halo because of its fast paced action, liking it better simply because it's the first and not giving newer games a chance is very obnoxious

Yeah, don't get me wrong here. I love DOOM. It belongs in my top 50. But that said, many other first-person shooters come before it.

Also, I'm not saying you CANNOT possibly like Wolfenstein 3D or DOOM more than any other FPS. It was just the logic behind the statement that was severely flawed.

it's groundbreaking really, not just because it's a great game, but because it's actually a good movie tie in! although there were plenty of good movie tie in games for the NES, they've gotten a pretty bad opinion towards them nowadays

Wow, you like Metal Arms, Brotoad? That's awesome. It's a great game.

Will anyone hurt me when I say that I've never played the original Goldeneye? I mean, I have two N64s, but I've never played it...

Buy it, make sure you have several controls, and get some friends together. You're pretty much guaranteed to have a blast. Never heard anyone say anything negative about GoldenEye's multiplayer.

The single player is also great, though, in my opinion. Love some of the stages. Especially Frigate. And it only becomes more fun when you've unlocked some of the cheats.

metal arms was a great game indeed, i loved the gun that let you control the enemies, real neat gameplay there! and if you ever tried it out with friends, the multiplayer was AWESOME. great singleplayer, great multiplayer, awesome graphics too, and the characters were great! especially how that swearing mechanic robot was voiced by homer simpson ahaha

I have five siblings, so yeah, we played Multiplayer.
Goldeneye sounds like a great game for the house.

Wait, that robot was voiced by Homer? I didn't know that!

Doom's got great labyrinthine levels and it's pretty immersive, but I've never beaten it.  It gets too boring after awhile.

Quake, now, that's another story.  I can own me some Quake.  I've played it on every game system I've ever owned.  My 1996 Dos PC, my 2002 PC, my current PC, my Dreamcast, My DS, my Wii...  That game just never gets old to me.  I love it, I love its sequels, and no matter what anyone says, Quake has got to be Top Dog in the FPS biz, at least for me.  If not Quake, then Half-Life.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are tied for a close second or third place.
