Yet there are complaints about some clients crashing and modded skins breaking so SPUF went nuts when this happened. That and after it's release, there was a bug where load outs couldn't be accessed. Personally, despite a few problems, I'd say it was a good step towards fixing some stuff, especially the back burner

You don't have to. Not for idling, anyway; the item drop system runs at all times as long as you're connected to Steam.

That's about half-right, you still need to be in a server, but that server can be entirely local with hl2.exe being a headless console window and you'll still earn items.
