Here is DragonForce's fury of the storm, remember that this is power metal and metal has a lot of subgeneres:
That's a subgenre, I wanna stay clear of them. Just as if I put Terrorcore in "Gabber" just because it's a subgenre.

Another point (irrelevant to the first point), no indie music for the examples pease. If I wanted indie music, I'd go on newgrounds (although indie can sometimes be better than the signed artist's.) :P!

Thank you for your suggestion though Trollman.

We need proper examples because of:

That makes it kinda hard for examples, because with all of the sub genres it's hard to describe what's "pure" metal, rock, etc. Also I just want to point out you do got a few Electronic sub-genres in there :<

Now you're just trying to make it hard for me hnggggg

Now for examples.
As a fan of rock, I wanted to give an example, but with the rule of "No Sub-genres" this became kinda tough, since I realized I don't listen to a lot of straight-up Rock.
So, I come with two examples.
Just by Radiohead
Tree of Knowledge by Wild Orchid Children
Now, I know that Radiohead is known for making Alternative Rock, but I feel that THIS song kind of captures what I assume regular Rock would be.
Lots of distortion, crazy, fun, and nice riffs. Also cool guitar solos.
Radiohead COULD be considered mainstream since, while they aren't played tons on the radio and praised among most teenagers, they are still quite popular, so I also bring the Wild Orchid Children song.
They are also considered Alternative Rock, but again, I think they produce some great riffs and still write crazy fun songs. At least, they show that with this song.

Now, you might be thinking "REBOOT EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT ROCK IS THEY DON'T NEED AN EXAMPLE WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING", so I have forced myself to come with another sample for a different genre. That is, dubstep.

Now, I don't listen to dubstep, but I have heard and know about it enough to be able to give a viable example.
I present: Rutten by Skream!
I know that there are many other dubstep artists that are much more popular than Skream, so why share this one? Because from what I've heard, Skream! is described as "actual, real, dubstep", so don't worry if this dubstep seems very far from what you usually hear as dubstep. I looked up the definition for dubstep, and it's described as:
"a genre of electronic dance music. Its overall sound has been described as 'tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals'." And I think this song does show that.
If I seem completely clueless about dubstep right now, I'll just delete this half of the post. I just wanted to be a bit more helpful with the knowledge I have.

No votes for hip-hop or reggae, and only 1 vote for house? I hate all of you so much right now. Having said that, can we add chiptune to the mix, as well as bunch dance and house into a category called electro?

Electro is a much different genre to House and Dance :/.

Can't really add more to the poll, it resets all poll answers.

Pretty interesting to see that most people voted for metal/rock with a close followup by classical.
So... Any of you listen to metal in classical forms?

Meh, don't care if it counts or not, but I just listen to whatever sounds good. I can't really listen to that heavy metal, and really hard rock isn't really my type either. I especially hate those songs that sound more like the person is just yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs rather than singing. If I want to listen to a song, I want to listen to something that has a tune/melody, or something catchy, not a whole bunch of ear killing noise.

Aaand I'm gonna stop right there before I start ranting.
