1) People like to make maps, and they like to have those maps played instead of sitting in the dust. (People still don't host Lilypack though ;

2) zillions of mapping competitions and collaborations have happened, and all of them were very popular and successful.

Also welcome back, Atticus. It's good to see your name around again in spite not interacting with you much in the past.

Possession is underplayed because it has oddities with its map reset code that breaks tons of stuff and thus has gone "officially" unsupported by the core. Any issues you find related to round-long bugs will likely go unfixed regardless of whether it's even possible to do so.

Well in my experience I haven't found many bugs in possession outside of a glitch in Cold Man's stage that was patched in v4b. The issue I've found is that many of the maps in the vanilla game (I can't speak for map packs) are simply not well suited for possession because they are too big/small or have a gimmick or too many hazards. I've had an idea in my head of creating a map pack specifically tailored for possession, because I know what qualities a map needs to suit the mode, but I don't have great map making skill.

Then just do what I did and go straight for it.
After a while of just looking at maps and working on mods, I just picked up a slight knack for making maps naturally as part of the process of development.
I just have a huge problem with mapper's block and spend a lot of time on hiatus from mapping.
