What are you guys using to make fangames?
« on: November 26, 2011, 07:25:44 PM »
I have a lot of experience with Game Maker but the only Megaman engine I've ever found was sub-par and not quite what I wanted. I see a lot of fangames around here and so I was wondering: what engines/programs/etc are you guys using? One of these days I want to get around to working on a MM fangame.

I used Game Maker to make my fangame, but I did used an engine (Kurofox4444's MM Engine) though to make it easier for me. However that engine, it was very flawed and right now I'm trying to patch up those flaws (I spent like nearly a year to get it to what it is now). A friend of mine is also using that same kind of engine I'm fixing up.

Probably more than half of the ones here aren't really being made, but Megaman 9000 is being made with Game Maker, if I recall.

I was making my own Game Maker Mega Man engine, and while I had the screen transitions working (including boss gates), and basicly gave up when I couldn't figure out how to fix up the collision detection with walls. Argh!

Have you tried looking at other engines for help? GG2's is easily accessible.

Mega Man Wäter is currently using Game Maker. We hired this community's Lego to touch up on an engine we found online.
I would have preferred we use Multimedia Fusion 2, but none of us have the money.

Fan Game Maker over 9000. So Pro.

Talking seriously, I would use Indie Game Maker (If you are more experienced) to develop a sidescroller or RPG Maker XP with the platformer script (RPG Maker is easy to use, compared to other game developers).

So, is there any good Mega Man engines for Game Maker? Mine, while being able to play NSF files and having screen transitions, is a coding disaster. As I said before, I have problems with walls, and the ladders are an incomplete mess. There's also no enemies.

I could PM someone the engine to fix up the code...

If I recall, there is one made in C# being made by a programming buddy of mine. (Search Tessarex Megaman)

Currently MMTT is using that engine. I would've used it had I started a Fangame instead of working on a original game.

Also this engine has added NSF support (iirc remembering what Tessarex said on the TT Dropbox).

Currently, no more than 5% Robot Masters of The List are actually programmed into something.

There are quite a few Game Maker MM engines spawning since 2008, although few are actually free to the public: (in no particular order)
Kurofox4444's GM7, the most popular one among amateur fangame creators; Mania, Chrome, Generation etc.
Blyka's GM7; Many of his games
MexicanSunflower's GM81; MGR (Gatuca)
MrweirdGuy's GM8; Next/Extra

And non-Game Maker ones:
N64Mario's MMF2; Unlimited, Finale (MisterGambit) etc.
Tesserex's C#; Time Tangent
RM8FC abandoned engine; +2 (chengkitsun5), +3 etc.
Arthur's SDL; Retron

Kackebango made the engine completely by himself for that matter.

Also, NSF support is made possible using DLLs with some sort of extension called S-Winamp. Oh well.

RPG Maker 2K3 for a Touhou RPG. No I'm not obsessed with Touhou! Just Partially.

I want to compare Kuro's engine to my old engine to see if its better, but I can't find a download anywhere. Anyone got a link?

My old engine was a modified one. It had a lot of useful features, but not everything. I did manage to add co-op as a test, though, which was pretty neat.

Dropbox mirror.

Kurofox4444 discontinued the engine for over a year and the engine itself is very incomplete, so don't expect it to be usable without a major overhaul.

I thought this was a GM7 file? Its telling me its in a newer version of game maker.

Eh... oh well. My engine was only missing a few things that this one has, so I'll just have to keep using that...

Besides, currently, the engine I'm really interested in is being made by devmas. He's putting a lot of work into it, so I can't wait to see it finished.
