The Plus Armor. Also known as "fuck what's your gimmick this time". Long story short, this is my new mechanized mount. Created for SmashBro by Dr. Daniel Oshiro, this modified piece of Ride Armor substitutes raw power for versatility. By removing the arms, extra power can be routed to other systems like the boosters and a force field generator.

The two forms of the Plus Armor, tentatively titled "Legs Gear" and "Rolling Gear", allow for different tactics in combat. The Legs Gear sports a high jump and is armed with a powerful set of twin plasma cannons. Using the air thrust boosters and the strong jumping force of the legs, this mode is about finding a strong vantage point to unload clips of pain into unaware enemies. Should you find yourself in the middle of a firefight instead, transform into the Rolling Gear. The high speed all-terrain treads allow the user to quickly maneuver around steady ground, and the head-mounted refraction buster returns fire at a fast pace. The boosters are now jet-propulsion engines, perfect for quickly dashing across a large area in a fairly short amount of time. While it does sacrifice raw force and power jumps of the Legs Gear, the speed and maneuverability of the Rolling Gear is especially useful for chasing down retreating foes or to make a retreat of your own.

So... does it look good? :ugeek:

I started with individual pieces of each mode (trust me, these are MANDATORY if I even hope to do the rotations), then assembled the three-quarters view of each mode using the parts. I also made the treads on Rolling Gear darker; I thought it looked nice. While the blue colours are pretty neat, I was curious as to how the suit would look with a more "fiery" paint job.

Which palette do you prefer? Any suggestions on other colours?

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I'm not sitting in it. No, this is just the suit. I'll work on spriting my face some other time.

Damn, SmashBro. Shouldn't this, like, belong in Resources or something? Or Skins and Bots?

The Resources subforum is defined as "sharing assets with others". In fact, besides having only one topic per user, the only other rule is "you can't post anything here that you don't intend to allow other people to use". I'm spriting the Plus Armor specifically for SmashBro's use as part of the new class, and as such it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense if I saw it in three other user skins. I'm fine if someone asks to use these sprites for something, but Resources is more of a "grab and go" sort of thing if you know what I mean.

Also, this is my topic for sprites and I haven't posted here in a good while. This is an excuse for doing so. :ugeek:

I'm assuming that by "damn, SmashBro" I did a good job on these?

They're based off the ability cards from Sonic Battle.

Korby is a bad influence :ugeek:

In case you're wondering what the last two are, they're concepts for an amphibious-type mode for the Plus Armor. This new "Toad Gear" would stomp around like the Legs Gear would, albeit at a slow pace. With its softer landing pads, the Toad Gear also has a much shorter jump than when using the power-lock metal boots of the Legs Gear.

While these drawbacks might make it seem as if the Legs Gear is the superior choice, the real beauty of the Toad Gear is revealed while submerged underwater. In the ocean, the Toad Gear allows its operator to move at quicker speeds and to make large floating jumps, utilizing the booster's new propeller module. Attempting to execute a manual boost will create a whirlpool force at the feet of the landing pads, quickly grounding the Toad Gear and dealing damage to anyone caught underfoot. (I mean really, being suddenly pounced on by several tons of reinforced metal alloy has got to sting.)

The weapons of the Toad Gear are fired from an under-mounted bombing tray, which lowers and opens up to release its ordnance. Being a tool optimized for undersea combat and exploration, the assortment of weapons is suited for much the same purpose; many of the Toad Gear's attacks are modified from simple equipment one might bring to a snorkeling trip. As with the armor itself, these aquatic weapons can also be used on dry land, though with varying degrees of success.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to talk about those last ones, but I like that you made it look even more like a mouth.

Go right ahead!

That was sort of unintentional at first. Since you said you wanted "mounted machine guns" I tried to make, well, a hanging machine gun. That looked like crap though (and it sort of obscured most of the left leg) so I made a bombing tray instead. It was still mounted on the underside, and a lot of the Toad Gear weapons can be dropped or thrown from a tray such as that, so why not? When I tried positioning it though... yeah, I saw that I made it look like a mouth. Originally the tray was just going to light up and fire shots, but with the placement I thought it'd be pretty funny to have it open and close, sort of like a chomping motion.

Oh yeah, this is what Korby meant, by the way. It's his original pitch for the design.

Wait a minute, GEAR?

As in Metal Gear?

So why LEGS Gear? Just call it Biped Gear or Ostrich Gear or Walker Gear

Why would one used a legged walker as a submersible vehicle? A legless pod-type craft would be much more mobile, being able to maneuver at will in three dimensions rather than having an inconvenient jumping mechanism.

There's a reason why the underwater armor from X3 is terrible, you know.

ANIMALS. I can dig it.

... Wait, what only moves on the ground and in a straight line? Snails are slow, snakes swerve... hmm...

With this "update" I actually thought of changing Legs Gear to Walker Gear simply because Toad Gear... you know, has legs, but following that logic Toad Gear can also walk and Rolling Gear is supposed to be the fast guy anyway.

I like Ostrich Gear a lot though.

When designing the original two modes for the Plus Armor, Korby and Ukiyama brought up "Froggy" from Mega Man X3. I said that having a mode that was only useful on the four stages in the game that have water on them would be incredibly stupid, and Korby set out to prove me wrong, which is why the Toad Gear even has legs in the first place.

The concept of a legless pod form was thrown around a few times with CSCC devs. You would be able to freely move around underwater like YD Bubble Man's swimming, but on land you wouldn't be able to move without jumping as you lack legs or wheels. I really don't like such a degree of sharp specialization, and I wanted the Toad Gear to at least be semi-viable while above water.

In any realistic application you would be right; a legged vehicle would prove vastly inferior to an exploration pod. However, this is designed with game logic in mind, and the first rule of any game is "have fun". Being useless on land isn't really the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word "fun". So it has legs.

also Toad Gear can walk whereas the X3 guy was useless on laaaaand

Solution: make Toad Gear walk on land in a very stupid fashion. Imagine Bubbleman walking in real life with those flippers. There's your Toad Gear walking mechanic. Also, give him dive missiles and a huge jump height.

Ostrich Gear would have a normal walking cycle and machine guns/Plusma Buster (power), Toad Gear would have increased situational mobility and heat-seeking missiles (special), Dillo Gear would have the tank treads for mobility and a shield to protect itself while also capable of damaging others (defense).

Combine them all, and what do you have? A giant bipedal mecha with homing missiles, machine guns, a lazer gun and overall gret mobility for its size.
