Oh Core, how I hate you
« Reply #15 on: June 18, 2013, 03:35:52 PM »
I initially bought the WiiWare version and I loved it. I got Cave Story+ soon after and I love it even more if only because the controls feel more precise, but the remastered soundtrack is also a big part of that. I also tried the original recently, but for some reason it lags on my machine.

The game became really easy for me, so I started a hard mode run. I got stuck for a while in the Sand Zone, the Monster X fight, Labyrinth M, and I'm presently stuck on the Core. I still need to get around to beating Ballos. I love the game to death.

I don't care what any of you say, I love the WiiWare's soundtrack.

Eyes of Flame is the best track in any of the game's soundtrack renditions ever.

I also encourage you all to download Cave Story Recomposed if you haven't already.

He is not really that hard. Blade lv.3 and Bubble Gun help against the missiles, Your Primary and missiles are good at doing damage, same with the blade if it gets downgraded to lv.2. Fireball is mostly useless in the fight.

I have and have only played the original with a translation.

Monster X isn't really that hard as long as you can spam lv.2 sword. Sometimes lv.2 sword works better, but not always.

The WiiWare soundtrack is lazy as shit but still good. It's like NSMB2.

Having played the 3DS version as my first, I have to say it was cool, but too short and the replay value is poor. I did buy it at $40, you know. It was after that when I learned about the other versions, and it hurt like HELL. Nah, just kidding. That level hurt harder.

EDIT: The first time I beat Bloodstained Sanctuary, it was with the Machine Gun. It was tedious, but the level 3 floating ability was worth it.

After playing the game enough, it becomes rather easy. It just takes a bit of knowledge on dodging....

Relevant bump.

I resumed my Hard Mode playthrough of Cave Story 3D today. Seems that it's possible to get HP upgrades from characters, and most are mandatory. It's kind of disappointing, as I was sure it would be 3HP all the way to the end.

I think they should somehow come up with a way to continue the story and make a Cave Story 2, that would be pretty sick. So, more relevant instead of me dreaming, who's gotten the secret ending where EVERYONE gets saved?

I was playing again on my Hard Mode file of Cave Story 3D. I reached Sand Zone when I realized something: the Missile Launcher was absent from my inventory. So I go back to Egg Corridor to check the room where I got it, and all I found was an empty chest. To be honest, I don't remember getting it in this run, so I conclude dreadfully:

There is no Missile Launcher on Hard Mode. Now I can never beat Ballos's 3rd form if I ever decide to run through Bloodstained Sanctuary.    I'd probably not make it past the falling blocks anyway.

Speaking of that boss, I beat him yesterday for the second time on my Normal file that has the Spur. The first time was on a Normal file with the Machine Gun, and I have to say, Spur and intense Super Missile spam really saved the day. Ballos's third form lasted about ten seconds, and it was the second one (bouncing head) that gave me a lot of trouble instead.

No store near me still sells this game.
After playing the Wiiware and PC versions I really would have loved to own a full 2.5D one.
