Skype doesn't have servers. In order to join chats, you need to be invited by another user. When you're in a chat, you can type messages, join calls, post files, ect. The basis is finding someone who can let you into a chat that's willing to accept you. There's a Skype topic in MM8BDM Discussion, so check that out for a bit more information than what I can give you.
