The Big (Not Smash Bros) Fighting Game Topic
« on: July 04, 2012, 03:35:00 PM »
I haven't seen many people on Cutstuff talk about or even slightly mention fighters that much, so I figured instead of making a topic for one specific title, I thought I'd make a topic to rally up all those who enjoy the genre of games that is Fighting. Smash Bros is more so a party game and as such requires it's own topic. This topic on the otherhand, is for all the traditional fighting games out there like Street Fighter, Tekken, and everything else. So Cutstuff, what fighters do you play? And on which system? If this gets enough attention, I'll put up a list of games (Including Supercade/GGPO) and the names of people that play them.

Normally on Xbox Live I play a lot of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom, but recently I've been playing Tekken 6 again to get myself hyped for Tag Tournament 2 which looks really damn promising. I also play games on Supercade and GGPO like Street Fighter Alpha 2, King of Fighters 98, Samurai Shodown 4, and others. Oh yeah, and I do occasionally play Touhou 12.3 *It's a fighting game!* on Hamachi.

I don't play many fighters because I'm bad at them, but I own Soul Calibur 2, 3, and 4, and I've been playing "Gundam Wing: Endless Duel" for the SNES a lot, hence my current avatar.

I'm "so bad I'm good" at fighting games.

As in, I know how fighting game structure works. How to chain moves, when to block, all that fun stuff. Usually if a game has a simplified control setup mode, I'm pretty darn good. Take Street Fighter 3D for instance. I avoid binding all the "OP shit" to my touch screen and usually have basics set down there (like Heavy Kick and Shoryuken), and I'm not too shabby.

What gets me screwed over is the "finger origami" that every fighter in existence forces down your throat.

Seriously? Why can't fighting games be like Smash Bros. or Power Stone where ATTACKING IS ONE BUTTON? What's with all this "corner-back" and "side-circle" crap nowadays? In order to even do a somewhat simple air juggle you have to wank around the control stick about five times in different patterns and personally I find it to be irritating. Hell, to pull of some specials there's usually TWO of these control stick movements, and you have to press three buttons at the same time WHILE doing said movements.

If fighters learned to make simple control schemes without compromising higher-tier gameplay, I'd be a much bigger fan of the genre. As it stands, though? I really don't enjoy playing fighters. It's a shame.

I only like fighters

for Guile's theme

I don't currently own any fighter games as it stands, but I want to get Tatsunuko Vs. Capcom or whatever it's called.

Because "I'm Frank West"

Also does Mega Man: Power Fighters count because my cousins have that

Power Fighters is pretty much a Megaman game cut down to only boss battles. I hear people refer to it as a fighting game sometimes, but I wouldn't really consider it one.

One of my pet peeves is people thinking Power Battles/Fighters is a fighting game akin to Street Fighter 2. Everyone who's played both know the difference, but there's some who just see a screenshot or the "fighting game" label and assume that they're the same.

And yet, it technically -is- a fighting game since, like you said, it's one on one battles, with no platforming. Even Double Dragon gets called a "fighting game", although the much more appropriate generic label "beat em' up" is available.

Anywho...

I'm psyched for the re-release of MvC1!

M.U.G.E.N.

Free downloaded game for your computer where everyone makes their own characters and stages and lifebars and menu screens etc.

For me this is amazing. You get to have a personalized fighting game that matches your interests and you can even make your own characters if you wanted to! (I've wanted to do this for years, but the severe lack of sprites is always holding me back.

You'll notice that as you practice these kinds of moves when you're new to fighters, that you'll be doing them easier and easier to the point where preforming moves like hadoukens will be as natural as pissing. And once you learn simplistic moves like that, you will know special move motions for a lot of 2D fighters like King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Darkstalkers, and so on. The knowledge and understanding of quarter circle/half circle motions tends to transfer well, really.

Hahaha oh god, I actually played that version using regular controls/grooves
6 Button fighters do NOT work for the GC controller, but 4 button ones like KOF aren't too shabby.

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE

Isn't this an oldie? Has interest in this genre increased in the last few years?

I've been playing fighters for just about 1 and 1/4 years now, and man has it grown into being my favourite genre.

We've got a bunch of new ones in the coming months!

Haha, I wish I could play more fighting games but I don't have many options. I have Skullgirls, but as I'm now using Ubuntu I can't really run that one.

Oh? Which new games do you mean in particular?

Well, coming this year, we have:

Persona 4 Ultimax for PS3/360.

Guilty Gear Xrd for PS3/PS4.

While not necessarily a new game, Skullgirls should be done with all its Indiegogo DLC at the end of this year or early next.

Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm coming to PC sometime this year (With a Vita port of the previous game coming soon too.)

And while ALSO not really new, King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match was recently updated in Steam Database so it has a chance of coming as well.

And next year we have:

Mortal Kombat X coming around April next year for Xbox OnePS4.

Waaaay further ahead we got Tekken 7 for ArcadeXbox OnePS4 and Pokkén for Arcade and presumably Wii U later.

AAAaaaaand that's it. I'm pretty sure I forgot something, but I'll edit in whatever I come up with.
oh and Smash Bros soon, but don't tell Sam I said that
