Tossing this out there since this came to mind: What if the the pictures or passages that depicted armageddon weren't prophecies...but wishes?

Maybe the rulers, or kings, or whatever they're called grew tired of the lack-luster world they ruled due to the lowly lives he must care for, the homage which makes the crappy palace he live in look regal, and the constant imports of the same damn objects of intrest: food, clothing material, building blocks, etc. and the gathering of said objects as an offering to a god that probably (definately, to me) doesn't even exist. He'd want to stop being king, but he wasn't gonna tell all the people that he was gonna step down from the throne with his tail between his legs and he sure as hell wasn't gonna pin the problem on someone else. So he probably had this ominous and dark thought: what if something happened that made it so that no sane man could rule over their lesser of kin? Destroy it...but how? Their so-called God? Heh, that's not gonna happen. So they carved a picture of the world ending, or a passage depicting the apocalypse, hoping for something to happen...and nothing ever happens.

Or it could be just a Ruler-King-Whatever's journal entry, "God, being the aejkhnjekv is so bor-ing, I just wish the world would end." But that seems very unlikely.
