[Suggestion] Banning chatsp33k
« on: December 23, 2012, 11:41:23 PM »
This is a rule most forums seem to have and honestly I don't think it's a bad idea to put it around here.

Enforcing a little bit of literacy is what I mean. Now, I don't mean saying "Oh you have to spell every word right and use correct punctuation", I mean banning the use of internet chat speak. You know like "u wana go ply mm8bdm wit me 2morow" and that sort of stuff. It's generally unpleasant to look at/read, and I just don't see why it should be allowed.

Seconded.

Please, please, please enforce this. I don't think I can look at these kinds of posts much longer before I actually go and humanly destroy someone :/

Yes. Yes, yes, yes, and a thousand times yes. By the Nine Devilfucking Hells of Baator, I've fucking had it with these kinds of posts, and the less I have to read them the better.

Before any asks, this has nothing to do with understanding the language. Speaking like this is a result of sheer laziness, as failure to use proper grammar and spelling are acceptable due to language barriers. Capitalization, punctuation and "why", "you", and "are" have nothing to do with one's grasp of the english language; The first two are universal to pretty much all languages, and the three words are words that everyone knows how to spell. This is not a fucking chat room, put some blasted effort in your posts.

Chatsp33k, yes. You're only making yourself look like an illiterate fool.

Lack of capitalization, textbook punctuation and what not, no. You're only making yourself look like an asshole when going mad over this.

Yeah i suppose why not. Bit out of nowhere suggestion but its agreeable. I mean, its not like this is a phone and texting may or may not cost money so they use the most inhuman butchering of the English language just to save a few cents.

I'm fine with keeping the leet/chatspeak out if smaller mistakes like improper grammar, no punctuation, or large blocks of text remain an allowable error. Cant expect everything from the average internet user after all.

But to be honest i dont think i've ever seen anything to the lengts of leet/chatspeak here that would strain the eyes to decypher, so i'm partially wondering if we even need this rule.

I'm not talking about a draconian enforcement of capitalization and punctuation ("You missed a period on the end of your sentence! BANNED!"), any punishment would rather extend to those people who clearly aren't even trying with their posts. Lacking a decent grasp of the english language is fine and understandable. Choosing to not even bother is not.

You should read the first post more carefully. I stated that that is not what I was talking about

There seems to be a majority in favor, and lately, I've seen some veeeery rushed posts.

I want to know what the mods think of this.

While I can understand getting mad at this, I've only seen one or two people downright refuse to adopt the English language and I while I wouldn't mind adopting a rule like this, I wouldn't feel right passing out warnings for it.

It's more-or-less Korby's, CutmanMike's, and Ivory's decision.

This will certainly cut down on my use of the foe list. Still, it would be good to only deal out warnings instabans for "people" who don't even try to be coherent.

This is not chat speak. This is "l33t sp34k". The problem (or issue at hand, if I may) with your example is that typing in l33t actually takes longer than typing in "normal" or chat speak. Thus, it's rarely (if ever) used. Implementing a ban on this would be useless. Besides, l33t speak is, at least funnier and somewhat novel compared to this:

And really. If you can't even ban something like that (which is common), what are you even banning at all? As Llama mentioned, at best one or two people might speak like this, if ever, and you can't change someone's behavior with a rule like this; only eliminate it.

I'm all in favor of updating the rules, as I've mentioned before, but I'd like it done in a way in which moderators enforce something that's agreed on. When people in this topic can't even agree on what 'chat speak' is (let alone find examples of it), I'm worried about the consequences of suggesting a rule to ban it. Even though such a rule would likely change nothing, except add clutter to the rules page.

So quick question; assuming that chat speak is banned, are we still allowed to use nickanmes, short forms and acronyms?
