As I read this they simply couldn't get the price down to the point they'd like without cutting features, so that's exactly what they did.  I never use the damn 3d anyway so I understand that removal completely and making it all fit into one hardcase probably simplifies the internal components, allowing them to use slightly less compact alternative parts at a cheaper rate.  At this price point it might as well be a finishing move on the psp/vita and makes it much harder for other potential competitors to enter the market.

Besides, it's not like they're going to stop making the 3ds as well.

Kid Icarus: Uprising, Mario Kart 7, and Animal Crossing New Leaf aren't on the 3DS

I'm uh
confused.

I was being sarcastic btw, it wasn't a typo

Also Alice, I wasn't trying to change your opinion, but saying the 3DS is a terrible handheld just because you don't think the games are good is a really bad excuse to say it's overall bad. I have 3 games for the Wii U that got stale to me and I quit playing, but i still think the Wii U is a great console, not because of the games, but because of the how big of a step up it was from the Wii. Same with 3DS, it was a huge step up from the original DS.

I still like using my DS Lite for certain DS games that don't handle well on the 3DS, like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon titles. Otherwise, I wholeheartedly agree that the 3DS is a complete step up from the DS.

Anyway, the only thing the 2DS really has going for it is that it appears to have the original DS's d-pad. Otherwise, it doesn't seem worth dishing out the cash if you've already got a 3DS. Also the circle pad and the buttons seem awfully high up...

I really don't see what the big deal is. I already have a 3DS so I'm not getting this, however i find that this is somewhat a good idea. Not as much people use the 3D on the 3DS as people who usually have it off, and if all you want is a 3ds and dont care about the 3D then this would be a better idea. Also what with Ivory said about it being released near X and Y's release its a good marketing and helps people who just don't have enough money to buy the 3DS itself.

I'm not a single mother of 4 hoping to spend $200 this Christmas, I already own a 3ds, and I like eating toast not playing games on it. I have no reason to buy one for myself. I see what they were trying to do, but it's.. just.. meh.

Also call me lazy but I'm not reading through the whole thread to check if this was already placed but here's a thing:

Before looking into this, all I heard was "2DS" and "3DS without the 3D."
I was kind of happy because "Hey! It's just the 3DS, but without the only feature I don't like! And it's cheaper!? Ohhh yessss...."
- - -
Then I watched the video of it...the lack of the flip-top design the DS, DS Lite, DSi, and 3DS had sort of killed it for me...

But like Ceridran posted on the previous page from an article, the shape appeals children due to its durability and the cheaper console connects younger generations to their company early. The shape doesn't appeal to me...but someone might have a use for it.

Forgive my digression, but that same post reminded me of why I was excited for Pikmin 3...

Dumb to you, but it was a smart move on Nintendo's part.

My girlfriend had the biggest laugh when I found out about this thing a few days ago and nearly flipped a table, so it gets points for that at least!

Seriously though, I wish I had something constructive and/or witty to add to the debate, but most of you have already expressed my concerns and points  about the shark jumping and the clever marketing, and et cetera, so I don't have much to say.

There is something that has been bothering me though. Oh what fun it'll be for all of the old timers, buying their children stuff for christmas and hanukkah and for shits and giggles and what not. The shopping list will say "3D Nintendo toy", but then they'll see the 2DS, get confused, notice the £30 cheaper price point and before ya know it... Sorry, Little Jimmy (aged 8+), but your hingey, 3D-filled christmas has been cancelled. Good luck with Mario 3D land!

Vice versa too. Parents might be asked for the 2Ds, but they'll see the 3DS, think it's a sequel of some kind, forget about the fact that they should read the instructions on that shit, and then sorry, Teeny Tommy (aged >7), but now your eyes are buggered forever.

And then all the parents will get angry that something maimed their kids/forced them to look at the instructions for once in their lives/somebody drew a 3D penis in their child's Animal Crossing game before eating their turnips or whatever, then we'll get some kind of second Jack Thompson and... well, ya get the idea.

With all that said, I might just be paranoid about this all, but I can't help but sense that there's gonna be a lot of confusion for the unknowing public...

The console's still better than the Wii Mini from Canada, but hey, just sayin'.

tl;dr: Parental derp's inevitable.
Also, here's some amusing related shiz to lighten the conversation while I sleep.

Also, one last thing that just came to mind: How's the circle pad pro thing for left handed people gonna fit on the bloody monstrosity anyway?

So, how are people/seven year olds going to be able to do the 3d puzzle boxes in Super Mario 3D world!
