State of the Servers
« on: October 14, 2013, 04:28:04 AM »
I was going to post this in Musashi's Saxton Hale thread, but that ended up being locked in its own gold-plating, so oh well. Anyways, I'd like to draw your attention to one detail here. Please look over the people in Musashi's thread. In fact, look over the vast majority of people who you consider core to Cutstuff, however you may define it. Now, over the next couple of days, please see who frequents the Saxton Hale server. Personally, I see very little overlap between the two groups. What does this mean, you ask? It means that posts on Cutstuff are not going to be a forum of rectification, instead, it's going to be one group of people looking down on another group of people. Not because they have any disdain or ill will for them, mind you, but because they're doing something they don't like. Anyways, on to my second point. Let's say, hypothetically, that you agree that Cutstuff long-timers or otherwise active members have little overlap with Saxton Hale servers.

Now, let's say you Magically filtered out all of those Saxton Hale servers, and Saxton Hale and its players were gone in the blink of an eye. As an aside, my observations have led me to beleive that this is what most Zandronum players do to MM8BDM as a whole (as if we came full circle), but I digress.

Now that your magic filter is on, what do you see on your server browser? Nobody?

Strange. The "core members of Cutstuff" don't seem to be playing MM8BDM, even if Saxton Hale isn't around.

It's almost as if Saxton Hale wasn't a cause for decay in MM8BDM play, but a result of MM8BDM decay.

Huh. Maybe we could just ignore that result and go back to what we were doing before Saxton "took over."

Just food for thought.

I'm just gonna say that I haven't been playing much of MM8BDM anything lately because of school. I'd imagine a lot of people have the same problem.

In General: Most people have school again so they aren't playing as much.

My Reason: Just like any game, you're eventually going to take a small break from it (which I'm currently on for another 2 weeks) just so the game isn't completely dead to you and retains some of its freshness. Some alteration of that may be other people's reasons too.

Cutstuff doesn't play MM8BDM. Cutstuff develops and discuss MM8BDM, among many other things. In fact, I might just say that Cutstuff doesn't play MM8BDM, it plays forum games.

School my ass, I always see over 20 people playing SH, and over 20 Cutstuff people on Skype that aren't playing MM8BDM. Cutstuff just stopped playing the game because it doesn't want to play it anymore until the next version.

Is it too painful to accept this? We don't play the game regularly, like the SH players. We wait for the new things and still there's a chunk of us that is just too dool 4 life to care about playing an "unbalanced game".

Also, please stop talking about "vast mayorities" as if there were any, and as if it matters. That goes to all of you.

I mainly play on the Saxton servers because people are actually there.

And hey, sometimes it CAN be fun.

So I guess I'm one of those people who goes on the Saxton servers AND on Cutstuff.

Of coruse, school can't contaminate every player, THROUGH it may be a reason for players to stop temporarily... I'm in that situation, I have no time to actually play MM8BDM, but I still follow the news (like the blessed Ivory posts on v4).

I noticed through, Saxton Hale is still not dead, on the contrary still blooming like always, with hundreds and hundreds of servers, and of people making modifications for it... but I know there's eventually Dr. Crasger's server, or for short, a Classes TLMS servers, which is still nice to look at, when people joined it. Considering famous people that have a giant postcount as "MM8BDM" core players, I tend to see one, or eventually two dev/core players. On occasion. I think the devs work a lot, without or rarely playing the game with casual players, online. The ones I saw the most were YD and Ukiyama, who randomly play the servers they like. (EDIT : yeah, like the ninja post two times above says). I think devs should either take a break from making, or take some more time to enjoy their creation :3 besides, you could even listen to the player's opinions !

Concerning servers other than SH and things with classes, the best nowadays is to make a game with your friends, because it won't be easy to resurrect a Vanilla, ScrewScramble, ?BOX, Ukiweps... server alone. Through feel the positive, Mission Mode and a new tendency that appears sometimes, Obstacle Course by Lobsters, are still servers people want to play in.
Do we need someone to post a new game mode to rebalance the things ? :3

I barely play 8BDM (or any FPS) at all most of these days. (I'm still wholeheartingly interested into what happens with the development, alongside testing stuff in the Dev Team.)

It's been a few weeks of silence to have played on a server, to be honest. I don't blame Saxton at all at this point as it's a whole other can of worms I don't need to open. I just find the very exsistence of Saxton like a cloud of cancer, it doesn't need to die at all (No, I'm not saying it needs to.) I just think it needs to be less active for a bit, I'm saying this because I'm kinda getting tired of seeing multiple servers with Saxton ("MEGA MAN X CLASSES SAXTON Hale," That is all.) I would like it if we had vanilla modes and stuff hosted, that way I could jump into playing 8BDM whenever I had the spare time from doing stuff in IRL and or otherwise getting bored of playing Doom and it's mods on Zandronum.

I'm not trying to start anything, I'm being honest as all hell right now. I just think we need to have more people flock on over to Vanilla, (Something like when Pink hosts a server for it and then streams the game.)

That's exactly the point I'm trying to make. Best-Ever makes it easier than ever to host a server. What's stopping you from "jumping into MM8BDM whenever"? Because it's not Saxton Hale being there. It's a separate factor now.

I typically play on Saxton Hale servers when the Lobsticle Course server isn't up.

Why?
Because that's what everyone else is doing I suppose.  There are times I'll go into say Roboenza mode and suddenly that fills up despite it just being me there.

I haven't been as active in the games lately because yes, school.  It does eat up your time.

I don't think people always have the patience (or, with school being in full force, time) to sit and wait in an empty server they want to play and wait for playmates to come. It can take quite a while, and by the time people actually show up, you may not even feel like playing anymore.

When I have some extra free time and I don't feel like doing anything seriously productive, I'll usually boot up doomseeker and take a look around. If I see a good game of DM or something else fun going on, I'll jump in without a second thought. If it's just Saxton Hale, though, I'll just find something else to do.

I guess what I'm getting at is a lot of "core" Cutstuff members that don't care for Saxton aren't all necessarily losing interest in the game (although that's probably true for some), they just lack the patience/time to set up a game that they actually want to play. If they completely lost interest, I don't think they'd be complaining too much.

Also I'm pretty sure I made pretty much the exact same post in Musashi's old topic.

I still play around 3 or 4 times a week.
But I don't play Lobsticle course.
And when I play SH I stay for a few minutes because I get bored fast.
...

Meh, I like GvH:LoD and Samsara/Brutal Doom Survival more. That's all.

"Core members" sounds like quite the elitist term for long time users. The fact remains that nobody is obligated to play this on a regular basis if they don't feel like it. In fact, it should be assumed that if long time users have been playing this since v1a, it would be reasonable to think they're either tired of it or just don't play as much anymore. Big deal, everybody has their own flavor of daily life, and there's plenty of other games.

I rarely get on the servers now, due to whatever reason I don't need to explain. Screw that argument.

Like I said before, "core members" is whatever you make of it, long time or otherwise, but I was implying that the people who tend to publicly loathe Saxton's dominance are also the ones who do nothing about it.
