WARFRAME
« on: March 27, 2014, 11:28:22 PM »

Warframe is basically Spiral Knights, only a) it's a third-person shooter and b) it's made by devs who are both competent and listen to players more than once per year. Kill dudes, get loot, use the loot to make gear to kill dudes harder with. However, unlike Spiral Knights, there's a lot of customization you can do with the mod system, and with the exception of the starter weapons (which are frankly trash and should be dumped as soon as possible) there's only two classes of weapons, with the "better" Prime class not being mandatory for progression. There's an anniversary promotion for a free gun until next Wednesday, so sign up now!

Okay, if you have even a minor interest in Warframe you need to get in on this. I will personally taxi people to these alerts when I can, just get over here.

Definitely enjoying this game. HARDCORE PARKOUR space ninjas ftw!
Also, I'm trying to unlock Vauban, but it'll take awhile...

Welp, the devs just got bought (or are selling part-ownership, still a really bad sign) by Perfect World and some food company so this game is going to be P2W and even more stagnant inside of a year. (See here for the widespread opinion on the buyout. It's a porncrop, BTW; no bits, but it may hurt some people's delicate sensibilites. You have been warned.)  Which means I should probably actually properly introduce this game before it's unplayable.

First, the story so far, courtesy of a based /vg/ anon (and which is far too close to the truth for comfort, considering the temperament of Digital Extremes):
(click to show/hide)
- Welcome to Warframe. After the initial tutorial, you have to choose between Excalibur, Loki, and Rhino. Excalibur is the Mario frame, not really good at anything with the exception of Radial Blind, which is a great disable with stacked Power Range. Loki is the sanic frame, absurd run speed and disable abilities that make him great for running around grabbing time extenders in Survival. Rhino is the attack frame, with the ability to deal TONS OF DAMAGE and stack lots of health and shields.
- You start with 50 Platinum. DON'T spend it right away. You'll want to figure out what works best for you and then buy Superchargers for it. Don't BUY Platinum right away either, because the prices at the market are a complete ripoff otherwise. ($5 for a color palette? REALLY?) Wait for the daily log-in RNG roulette to give you a plat discount of at least 50% first. Better yet, don't buy plat at all; you can grind for rare mods (or max-rank mods like Serration that everyone wants but take way too much investment to max-rank) and Prime crafting parts and sell them in the Trading chat channel for Platinum to dorks with more money than sense. At this point, you really only need Platinum for weapon and Warframe slots, everything else is either a rare drop, cosmetic, or bait to make money off dorks with more money than sense. (Of course, with PWE in the picture, all bets are off.)
- Buy new weapons as soon as possible, the starters you get are trash. Braton and Lex are your rifle and pistol replacements, available from the weapon equip menu. Cronus is your melee weapon and is available in blueprint form after defeating Cap'n Vor in Mercury. Other crafting blueprints are available for credits from the Market.
- Crafting takes a long time. This is bait for dorks with more money than sense. (Sensing a theme here?) Don't rush builds.
- Blueprints are consumable unless stated otherwise. This sucks. Think before you craft.
- Don't transmute mods, it's a waste of money.
- Superchargers are your P2W items; Catalysts for weapons, Reactors for Warframes. They double the mod capacity on items they're applied to. Mods help you win. You used to be able to get them (and blueprints to craft them) from limited-time "Gift From The Lotus" Alert missions after a Devstream, and DE's been giving them out in bunches recently, but again, Perfect World will slow that to a trickle most likely. (I personally have 3 of each Supercharger with only the starting plat and Alerts.)
- Forma are essentially Prestige Mode: sacrifice your max-rank weapon or Warframe to get an unranked weapon or Warframe with a new polarity. Putting a mod with a given polarity into a slot with the same polarity halfs its cost. This lets you put in more mods, which helps you win more.
- Join a Clan. JOIN A CLAN. Nearly all of the game's "good" content requires Clan research in some form. Plus being part of a Clan gives you people to play with and chat with. (My Clan leader personally up and gave me 100 Platinum when I complained about being too poor for a Clan emblem. DOOM SQUAD 4lyfe, PM me and I can hook you up.)
- Go to http://www.warframe.wikia.com/ when you need a particular mod, they have complete drop tables. Codex scans can also get you this stuff, but it takes a fuckton of time.
- About Void: The Orokin Void is like the Shadow Lairs in Spiral Knights, except while SLs are more bonuses for people who are too optimized for everything else Void is much more accessible. Running Void missions gets you lots of credits, Argon Crystals (which are the new P2W, they decay over time and are used to make new weapons and do the construction for the Dark Sectors system) and random Prime parts and blueprints, which can be used to craft the Prime weapons. You also get a very small chance at getting Supercharger blueprints, as well as a somewhat larger chance at Forma and Forma blueprints. See the wiki for details.
- There are several Warframes which you probably want to avoid. Nekros is really expensive, and his only real use is spamming Desecrate in high-level Survival missions to spawn more loot and time extenders to last that much longer. Basically every caster frame with the exception of Nova, (Molecular Prime is the best damage-dealing ability in the game, and anyone who disagrees is either a dumbass, a troll, or a liar) Nyx, (thanks to her Absorb ability getting damage from the new Angstrum landmines' selfdamage) and Trinity (not quite as dominating as before her recent nerf, but still able to make a team basically immortal when properly built) are just not worth using. Valkyr, while admittedly pretty cool, simply can't kill things hard enough to keep up with the aforementioned caster frames, although she does have a situational use in rescuing teammates surrounded by heavy hitters while under the influence of Hysteria.
- One thing about the community: Warframe players really like porn and image macros, which is probably a natural consequence of the extensive 4chan presence there combined with the game being about genderfluid, possibly shapechanging killing machines in skintight plastic bodysuits. Expect lewd in the Region chat channel as a consequence.
- Stay away from the forums and streams at all costs. They're full of sycophants and shills who are either paid to stroke the... egos of the devs or too psychologically and/or financially invested to even process the idea of Warframe being less than perfect, and run by egotistical mods (and egotistical developers) who make the above bullshit plot sound plausible. I mean, look at this shit. Based anon the second has this to say on DE:
Quote
They were taking government grants back in 2012 to stay afloat after numerous commercial and critical failures. Their latest game at the time being Darkness II was generic and didn't sell very well. They took a 2.5 million government grant to create jobs and eventually had to fire 21 people around last May following the failure of Star Trek which led to another game deal being canceled based on how shit terrible Star Trek was. This left them with no projects and no money. They put all their eggs into the Warframe basket which paid off. It literally saved their company. They celebrated 20 years back in January and sadly they either kept blowing through the money or were in so much debt they had to sell to PWE/Sumpo Foods. The funniest part about DE is they created the Unreal Engine for Epic Games. They had the chance to merge with Epic Games and decided not to. They as a company have an enormous ego thinking they are hot shit because of this, while making shit game after shit game. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner at their offices- offices that are as good as if not better than Valve's offices. They spend money like they are Valve, they turn out shit games and can't take criticism. They are like the rich kid who no one likes, who has no talent and throws money around thinking if they act important- they are.
Still a better game than Spiral Knights, at least for now.
