I'm new to MM8BDM.  I got it running on my mac, server and all, under wineskin, and I have been able to get games running fine on LAN and WAN.  But I don't see many others playing.  Am I late to the party?  Do enough people still play for netplay to matter?

Welcome!

While it's true that the game isn't as active as it was some years ago (and in general is more active during the Summer time of the year), there are still a decent number of players for the game and the community is still fairly active, with events and projects still ongoing.

Do you use doomseeker to browse public servers?

Yes, and tonight me and my boyfriend were able to play a few rounds with a server I found that way.  I just found out I needed to update zandronum, so now I should be able to connect to all those other games that shot me down before.

In general, I only see one or two active servers up.

Just of note: v4b is coming out very soon so you'll need to update the pk3 as well.

What timezone are you in? You may be clashing with the rest of the active community.

Eastern.  Ohio player here.  I usually play at night though, figuring there would be a world wide audience.  I'm up early today, so I'll try after my lunch.

Everybody is using zandronum 1.2.  I'm going to downgrade and see if I can get in.

edit: versions seem to fluctuate.

All of the MM8BDM servers should be using Zandronum 1.3.

Are you getting some kind of error when trying to join a server? And if you would, please show us a screenshot of the MM8BDM servers you see on Doomseeker.

(Also, as a friendly reminder, please try not to double post right after you've just posted, especially in such quick succession. I understand this time that you wanted to give more information, but just as a general rule.)

Sorry for poor form.  I'll edit if need be from now on.

I did get into a round with others, but they eventually left, with the last one left saying I was a bit too rough.  I apologized and offered to team up with him against some other players on another server.  He left.  I hope that didn't offend him. :(

Now when I connect, 1.3 is used.  I'm seeing "Protected lump authentication failed."  I was seeing WAD and password errors before.  Normally I would think this is just a game that doesn't like wine, but it ran fine in single player, LAN, and a few online rounds.

Edit: forgot doomseeker screenshot

edit:  I think I found the problem.  If I run doomseeker within my wrapper and join multiplayer from there instead of the launcher, I can get in.  The only exception so far seems to be servers running zandronum 1.2, which I can still join if I set doomseeker to use the old zandronum.

So it looks like I need to fix my wrapper.  Does anyone have the command line args for the launcher or zandronum?  If I can get those, I can use the native doomseeker rather than bundle everything together.  Specifically, I need to know if there is a way to tell it to look outside it's own folder for game files downloaded by doomseeker and how to pass the IP and port of the server to zandronum.

No, I just got nervous-ish. I had worried that I offended you...

Hi Jumbo!  I'm not offended.  Things just ended so abruptly I thought I pissed everyone off.  I'm still good for a teamup if you want later on.  Right now, I'm working on learning how the launcher works.

Edit:  Is there a reason that server uses the old zandronum?

It appears there is a mac version of zandronum.  The mac version of doomseeker works properly with it.  I cannot get the same control over games as I can with the launcher, and launching single player is a bit awkward, but it does work now.  I was making things needlessly complex.
